About The Entry

Inspiring Formosa: Island Reflections in Organ Sound premiered at the National Concert Hall in Taipei as a technology-driven cultural prototype. The project integrates one of Europe’s oldest musical traditions—the pipe organ—with advanced lighting and media technologies, establishing a new paradigm in both conceptual and stage lighting design.

In this project, projection mapping is no longer a supporting element but becomes an equal narrative agent within the architectural space. Through the generative AI (GAI) platform developed by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), musical elements—melody, harmony, and frequency spectra—are captured and translated in real time into dynamic light compositions. The system integrates architectural-scale projection mapping, immersive lighting design, and transparent holographic display technologies, forming a multi-layered visual environment. Vertical light columns articulate musical structure and order, while horizontal flows of light convey emotional intensity.

With the implementation of a 5G NDI low-latency framework, the synchronization between sound and light achieves near-zero delay, enabling a resonant field where audiences can visually perceive sound and aurally experience light and architecture as a unified system.

Culturally, the design embodies the concept that “each pipe organ reflects the identity of a city.” As the program transitions from Bach’s classical repertoire to contemporary Taiwanese compositions, the lighting evolves accordingly: Baroque polyphony is visualized as precise geometric light structures, while the Austronesian spirit of Taiwan unfolds as data-driven, futuristic visual landscapes.

Sustainability is embedded within the system through the replacement of physical stage sets with real-time generated digital environments, significantly reducing material consumption and transportation-related energy use. All generated content functions as reusable digital assets. As the inaugural chapter of the “Top 10 Pipe Organ Projects in the World,” this work establishes a scalable model for international cultural production, demonstrating how lighting design and technological innovation can redefine the future of classical performance.
